Lesson: Get all the natural sunlight you can into your house by opening up windows. To get the best light, place yourself between the subject and the light source, and aim to get some catchlights in your subjects eyes (if it happens to have eyes).
Attempts and the stories behind them:
I tried and Tried and TRIED to catch my daughter walking around in my church shoes, but she is just too fast and blurry. Or it was too dark (and too cold to open up the door to remedy the light problem). I quickly resorted to auto mode to catch the moment before it was lost. I did get this in manual. I know it doesn't follow much of the instructions beyond the "in" part, but seriously. Cute.ness.
Then she threw a hissy fit and I attempted to get a good shot of her IN a perfect toddler tantrum. Still blurry. But it does capture the whole feeling of the moment, I suppose. Ah, life...
Eventually, she calmed down and decided to play her favorite game: Sleeping baby. Not sure where this came from, but she likes to curl up in a blanket and pretend to be asleep until we wake her up. And that is when I hit gold. Or at least I would like to think so. Here is the shot straight out of the camera:
My little girl IN her daddy's heavy blanket from his church mission to South Dakota. He loves seeing her in it. We played that game for a good half hour after I got the shots I wanted. So we were all happy on a Sunday afternoon in the end. Whew!
